Library and Learning Services

Borrowing items from the Library.

Students can borrow material from either of the libraries of the DMU network.

Loan periods and Automatic Renewal

Normal Loans are for 2 weeks but, providing there is no reservation, will be automatically renewed for further periods, up to 99 times in all.

Short loan should be returned by 1pm next day – renewal is not possible.

Laptops are loaned for 2 hours, no renewals but students can borrow another one on return.

Inter library loans have variable due dates as these are set by the libraries who lend them to us.

Items on loan that have reservations cannot be renewed and fines will apply if they are not returned by their due date.

How to check your account and your loans

To see when your books are due back or if they are reserved go to The "My Account" section of the Library catalogue. You will be asked for your “Single Sign on” or you can use your Student ID number and a Personal Identification Number (PIN). You can request a PIN of your choice if you need to.

Reference and other non-loanable items

The following items cannot be borrowed from the library:

  • periodicals
  • reference works
  • company and annual reports
  • theses

Returning items

Normal loans

Can be returned to any DMU library.

Short loan items

Must be returned to the loaning library only.

Lost items

If you misplace or lose an item you will be asked to pay for it at the current replacement cost plus a sum to cover administration.

Fines are charged for the late return of any items and borrowing rights will be suspended until these are cleared.

Library Fines Exception Policy

Fines incurred from overdue items will normally only be waived in line with the circumstances described in our library fines exceptions policy. All items are subject to recall when reserved by another borrower, and due dates will automatically be amended to reflect this. If you feel your circumstances match those within the policy, then please ask at Kimberlin Library or contact us to discuss waiving fines.
